The Korea Coast Guard(Commissioner General Kim Yong-jin) announced that it recently participated in a month-long joint operation against illegal, unreported, and unregulated(IUU) fishing on the North Pacific high seas from June to early July. The operation was led by Fisheries and Oceans Canada(DFO) and included Canadian Coast Guard(CCG), Japan Coast Guard(JCG), the Royal Canadian Mounted Police(RCMP), the United States Coast Guard(USCG), and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administraion(NOAA). This joint enforcement action was widely recognized as a model case of multilateral maritime cooperation for preserving marine order and protecting fishery resources.
¡Ø Canada¡¯s official agency¡¯s name is Fisheries and Oceans Canada. However, the abbreviation, DFO stands for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
During the joint enforcement action, the Korea Coast Guard dispatched two officers, Senior Inspector Cho Sung-hun and Inspector Park Eun-ho, who boarded Canadian air and sea platforms, respectively, and actively took part in surveillance and enforcement. This participation greatly contributed to expanding the scope of Korea¡¯s international maritime cooperation on site.
This multilateral effort to combat IUU fishing in the high seas is considered a practical and impactful example of achieving shared goals among partner nations and is being highly regarded within the international community as a model of cooperation.
The Korea Coast Guard plans to deploy its own vessels to the high seas in the future for direct participation in IUU fishing suppression missions. Through such efforts, the agency aims to take on a more proactive role in maintaining maritime order in the North Pacific.
Director General of Planning and Coordination Ahn Sung-shik emphasized, ¡°The protection of sustainable fishery resources is a shared responsibility of the international community. As an implementing body of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Korea Coast Guard will continue to strengthen its role and cooperation in this field.¡±
